Wylfa decommissioning electrical overlay system project

Wylfa

Wylfa is a twin reactor power station which entered into the decommissioning phase in 2015, located on the north coast of the Isle of Anglesey between Amlwch and Holyhead in the northwest of Wales. The site is 20.8 hectares surrounded by grazing agricultural land and a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Client

The Wylfa site is operated by NRS (Nuclear Restoration Services, Formally Magnox). The site is currently receiving its power from the National Grid 132 KV System, local to the site, the intention is to transfer the site supply from the Grid to the local Distribution Network Operator, in Wylfa` case, an 11 KV supply from Scottish Power Energy Networks (SPEN).

Challenge

The existing electrical distribution system on site is complex, as you would expect, and is deeply embedded into the Wylfa site infrastructure; as such, any reliance on this system would restrict future progress into planned decommissioning activities, i.e. the demolition of the Turbine hall. A new and independent electrical distribution system is therefore required that will meet modern standards, and is more appropriate for the site’s present and future electrical load. UKPNS are to design and implement a system that meets the site requirements for the decommissioning works.

Approach and innovation

We use our vast experience from other environments including Network Rail, London Underground and Manchester Airport to design and install a system with the flexibility to help minimise costs when cables were inevitably diverted. All works are managed through Primavera P6 resource loaded programmes.

The project demands a strong commitment to flexible working and collaborating with the client and UKPNS Sub Contractors. We apply techniques from our ISO 44001 Business Collaboration accreditation to forge a close relationship with all parties involved. We hold weekly meetings and share key milestones with the client to ensure there is an overall joined up programme with dependencies clearly articulated.

Outcomes

Nuclear safety is our overriding priority and we continually work to ensure that all staff have the necessary knowledge and skills to maintain nuclear safety standards. All new starters carry out the in-house training given on site by the client. This is in addition to our proprietary in-house Stay Safe programme which aims to embed a culture of safety across the organisation. We pride ourselves on our achievements to date with an excellent safety record and strive to continue this through to completion of the project.

With the implementation phase of the project to ramp up in early 2025, we, as a team, will ensure that safety and quality are at the forefront of everything we do.
