Adoption

We will engage with the DNO or arrange an IDNO to adopt the network once it is constructed.

Adoption options

  • Distribution Network Operator (DNO): We will engage with the DNO to identify the point of connection
  • Independent Distribution Network Operator (IDNO): We will arrange for an IDNO to adopt the network once constructed
  • Privately owned network

Once a network is built it must then be adopted by the local DNO (Distribution Network Operator) or an IDNO (Independent Distribution Network Operator), who will own and operate the network for its lifetime. There can be incentives for the developer for an IDNO to adopt a network. Once the Connection Works are energised, the DNO will adopt those network assets that are to form part of the DNO's Distribution System as per the design, under an Adoption Agreement.

FAQs

How can I arrange connection to the distribution network for a new development?

arrow-icon

It’s straightforward, just let us know where your development is and what your requirements are and we will provide you with a proposal for the connection to the distribution network.

We will make the necessary arrangements with the local DNO, or IDNO, and ensure any work they have to do is coordinated with our works.

What are contestable and non-contestable works?

arrow-icon

When you apply for a new connection, there are two categories of work known as Contestable work and non contestable work which means that there are some elements of work that can only be carried out by the DNO. These are typically referred to as non-contestable activities. Activities that can be carried out by an accredited contractor such as ourselves are known as contestable works.

Non-contestable work – can only be undertaken by the host Distribution Network Operator (DNO). For example, there are certain types of reinforcement works that can affect the day-to-day operation of DNO networks. Due to the sensitivity and potential impact of these works, the DNO will only complete these works themselves.

  • Processing the ‘Non-Contestable’ application
  • Determining the Point of Connection*
  • Design approval of the network*
  • Inspection of the ‘Contestable’ works during construction*
  • Disconnection and removal of existing supplies*
  • Network Reinforcement*
  • Administration costs associated with network adoption
  • Obtaining statutory wayleaves
  • For larger HV* and EHV jobs, the final testing and connection to the electricity network.

Contestable work – may be undertaken by a suitably accredited Independent Connections Provider (ICP). Contestable works include the installation of cables, substations and other plant associated with the new connection.

  • Electrical Design of Distribution Networks
  • Cable Laying
  • Cable Jointing
  • Substation Installation
  • Civil Works, including site preparation, Excavation
  • Certain elements of existing network diversions
  • In some cases final connection to the existing distribution network

Contestable works have emerged in response to the introduction of competition into the UK electrical distribution network. The benefits of using UK Power Networks Services to complete contestable works include faster delivery, flexibility and cost-effectiveness, giving you more choice and greater control over your new connection process UK Power Networks Services can manage both the contestable and non-contestable elements of a new connection to provide a complete connection solution.

How can I ensure my development capacity requirements are met?

arrow-icon

We will work with you to understand your capacity requirements and design the optimum solution to meet those requirements. Our design engineers will work with the local DNO, where necessary, to identify the preferred point of connection to the distribution network to meet your expected demand.

We also have experienced in-house consultants who can help you determine the most suitable technical and commercial solution for your entire development if required.

How can I be sure the connection will be energised in line with the site construction programme?

arrow-icon

We understand the importance of meeting the delivery programme for connection to the distribution network for a new development.

Our experienced designers, planners and engineers work closely with you, and your partners, from outline design through to construction on site to ensure your deadlines are achieved.

How can I reduce the cost of Connection to the distribution network?

arrow-icon

By utilising our local in-house resources and an efficient and effective supply chain, our ICP Solution Offering is a competitive alternative to other providers.

We ensure our proposal for the connection to the distribution network includes for the most cost effective design whilst also ensuring resilience and quality is maintained.

How can I be sure the electrical infrastructure is built to the optimum quality and in line with the correct standards?

arrow-icon

Our knowledgeable design engineers understand electricity networks and make sure quality is at the forefront of all designs.

We are experienced with Distribution Network Operator standards and, being closely affiliated with one of the UK’s largest DNOs, we take pride in operating to the highest quality and industry leading standards. Our experienced training resources, make sure we keep up to date with industry developments.

What is a privately owned network?

arrow-icon

Your development could be connected directly to a DNO’s network, or connected via a privately owned network. For example, private networks can be owned by hospitals, airports, industrial sites, etc.

If you are connected to a private network, you should discuss your plans with the network owner. We offer partnerships with owners of private electricity networks to design, build, invest and operate their electricity infrastructure. Customers who own private electricity networks can frequently find the management of this non-core activity to be more of a burden than a benefit. This, however, is our area of expertise: we can adopt and manage private electricity network, taking responsibility for its network resilience and improving its energy efficiency and sustainability.
